Madano manmatho maaraha pradyumno meenakethanaha
Kandarpo darpako’nangaha kaamaha panchasharaha smaraha
Shambaraarirmanasijaha kusumeshurananyajaha
Pushpadhanwaa ratipatirmakaradwaja atmabhuh |
Translation ;
Madanah= god of love , intoxication ; manmathah=god of love , churner of mind ; maaraha =passion of love ; Pradyumna=son of Lord Krishna and Rukmini who was the incarnation of manmatha ; meenaketana= meena+ ketana=fish +flag , manmatha whose flag bears fish symbol ; darpaka= god of love ; he who prevents future events ; ananga=an+anga=without+body=bodiless =atanu =a+tanu=without+body . According shiva purana , a demon named Taarakaasura was blessed ( by shiva) that he would be killed by son of lord shiva only ( shiva was depressed by death of his wife sati who was daughter of daksha prajapati and was in deep penance ). Devas had requested Parvati , daughter of King Himavant to marry Shiva and bear a child (as Taarakaasura was troubling the demi-gods ) and they requested kamadeva to help them by bringing out Shiva from deep penance using manmatha banaas . Shiva was furious by baanaas , opened his third eye and burnt kamadeva . After request from Rati , Kamadeva regained his body by blessings of lord that he would be visible only to his wife .; smarah=recollection of love ; Sambaraari=Sambara+ari=demon Sambara+enemy=enemy of demon Sambara ; manasija=manasi+ja=from manas+born= mind born from Vishnu or Brahma ; kusumesha=who holds flower arrows ; ananyaja=ananya+ja=self+born=born to no one ; pushpadhanva=pushpa+dhanva= flower+handler of bow=who holds flower bow ; Ratipati=Rati+pati=Rati+huband=husband of Rati ; makaradhwaja=makara+dhwaja=name of fish+ flag=who has a fabulous fish named Makara on flag ; aatmabhuh=self existent ; usually makara means crocodile but here makara ia the name of the fish . In Greek mythology Eros is the god of love , in the west cupid is called the god of love , both are equivalent to Kamadeva in Hindu mythology. Cupid comes from the latin word “ cupido” means desire .

Aravindamashokam cha chutham cha navamallika
Neelothpalam cha panchaithe panchabaanasya saayakaaha ||
Translation ;
Aravindam=lotus ; ashokam=ashoka ; chutam=mango ; navamallika= jasmine ; neelothpalam=blue lotus ; panchai=these five flowers; panchabaanaasya= of five arrows ; saayakaaha= intended to be discharged ; Kamadeva’s five baanaas ( arrows) made with five given flowers are always intended to be discharged on the lovers . These arrows are floral arrows of Kamadeva .

Unmaadanasthaapanascha soshanaha stambhanasthathaa
Samohanascha kaamascha pancha baanaha prakeerthithaaha ||
Translation ;
Unmaadam=inflamed with love ; thaapam=mental or physical pain; sosham=faint ; stambanam=stiffen ; sammohanam=hypnotize ; kaamaha=desire ; prakeerthi=state or proclaim ; all these 5 arrows of desire proclaims the state of love . These are called physical arrows of Kaamadeva .

Brahmasurvishvaketuhu syaadaniruddha ushapatihi |
Translation ;
Brahmasu=brahma+su=brahma+son=brahma’s son , Aniruddha was son of Pradyumna ( son of Krishna and Rukmini ),who was the incarnation of Kamadeva . His nickname ( ephitet ) was Brahmasu . Viswaketu= Aniruddha means uncontrollable , without obstacles . As he resembles his grandfather Krishna in every aspect and Kishna is controller of unverse , he was named Visvaketu , syada=rapid , uncontrollable ,Aniruddha ; Ushapathi= Usha+pati=Usha+husband , Usha ( daughter of Banasura ) married Krishna’s grandson Aniruddha .
